Facial Yoga - the best facial muscle exercises for everyone
You regularly step onto your mat, focusing on spinal flexibility and abdominal strength... but do you remember to train the over 50 muscles you have in your face? We often forget about them, treating skincare solely through the lens of creams and serums. Yet, the face is the first area to show the effects of stress, fatigue, and the passage of time.
At JOYINME, we believe in a holistic approach to beauty. For us, face yoga is more than just "making funny faces" in front of the mirror. It's an effective, natural exercise that restores radiance to the skin, softens features, and acts as a non-invasive lift.
We'll show you a simple basic set, explain the mechanisms behind this method, and advise you on how to adapt the practice to your age – whether you're interested in face yoga for over 40s, 50s, or 60s.
Does face yoga work? What is facial gymnastics?
Yes, it works, and its effectiveness stems from pure anatomy. To understand what face yoga offers, we need to realize one key difference between the body and the face.
Most muscles in your body – such as biceps or thigh muscles – are attached to bones. With facial muscles, it's different. They are attached directly to the skin or to other muscles. This is why every emotion, grimace, or tension immediately reflects on your appearance. This works both ways:
-
When a muscle weakens and loses volume (which naturally happens with age), the skin loses its "scaffolding" and begins to sag with gravity.
-
When a muscle is constantly tense (e.g., from stress, jaw clenching, or squinting), the skin above it wrinkles and contracts, creating fixed lines and expression wrinkles.
Conscious facial gymnastics and yoga exercises therefore work in two ways. On the one hand, they strengthen and "pump up" weakened muscles, naturally filling the skin from within and lifting the oval (a lifting effect). On the other hand – they teach you conscious relaxation of areas where stress accumulates, such as the forehead or jaw (a natural Botox effect). This approach restores a rested and serene expression to the face.

Effects you'll love – what does face yoga offer with regular practice?
Regular facial muscle training is a way to take control of the aging process and regain radiance without resorting to invasive methods.
What can you expect?
-
A more defined facial oval and lifted cheeks. Muscles become stronger, so the skin stops sagging, and your face regains a younger shape.
-
Smoothing of expression lines. By working with face yoga on wrinkles such as frown lines or crow's feet, you learn to control unconscious tension in the forehead and eye area.
-
Release from tension. Relaxing the jaw and neck muscles brings incredible relief, especially if you unconsciously clench your teeth when stressed.
-
Natural glow. Better blood circulation oxygenates the skin and nourishes it better from within. It regains a healthy, fresh color.
-
No more morning puffiness. Massage and muscle movement support lymph flow, which helps to quickly get rid of under-eye bags or swelling.
Face yoga – basic set for beginners
Just as with mat practice, mindfulness and precision are important in facial gymnastics. Sit comfortably on your JOYINME mat, straighten your back, and take a deep breath. Remember that your spinal posture directly affects how the skin on your neck and jaw is positioned.
Here is face yoga for beginners – a simple set that will take you just a few minutes.
Warm-up and posture
Start with a straight back and relaxed shoulders. With your fingertips, gently tap your entire face, from bottom to top. Imagine it's a gentle spring rain. This simple action will immediately stimulate circulation and prepare your skin for further face yoga exercises.
Forehead and "frown line" exercise (The smoother)
Place both palms flat on your forehead so that your fingers point towards each other. Press lightly, preventing the skin from wrinkling. Now try to lift your eyebrows upwards, resisting with your hands. Hold for 5 seconds and relax. Repeat 5 times. Feel how the area between your eyebrows becomes smooth and free from tension.
Cheek lift and nasolabial folds
Cheeks are the muscles that lose volume most quickly. Try the "balloon" technique: take air into your mouth and move it from side to side, under the upper lip and under the lower lip.
You can also perform a "sun smile" – smile widely, lifting the corners of your mouth high, but be careful not to squint your eyes. This movement brilliantly sculpts the middle part of the face.
Face and neck yoga – beautiful oval and reduction of "double chin"
To care for your jawline, perform the so-called "kiss the ceiling." Gently point your chin upwards (do not tilt your head back too much, protect your cervical spine!). Pout your lips as if you want to kiss someone, feeling a clear tension in your neck. You are tensing the platysma muscle, which helps maintain a firm chin.
This set of exercises is an excellent start to introduce conscious care into your daily routine.
Face yoga for over 40s, 50s, and 60s – does age matter?
Wondering if this method will still be effective at your age? The answer is yes. Your muscles have an amazing ability to regenerate and strengthen throughout life. Only the goals you want to achieve change.
-
Face yoga for over 40s: This is a time when we focus primarily on prevention. We fight the first signs of gravity and the effects of fatigue. Exercises help maintain tissue tension, before expression lines have a chance to set in.
-
Face yoga for over 50s and 60s: Here, the main task is to work on skin density and improve the oval. Regular gymnastics stimulates collagen production, which naturally plumps the face. It's also a time to learn deep relaxation and acceptance of the changes happening in the body.
Tip: For mature women, great results are achieved by combining gymnastics with the ritual of facial massage. Use a few drops of natural oil. Gentle stroking and pressing movements further nourish the tissue and make the skin more elastic.
How often should you do face yoga to see a difference?
One workout once a month won't work wonders, but consistency will. The best face yoga is the one you actually do.
We recommend dedicating 5 to 10 minutes to exercises every day. If you prefer less frequent practice, opt for longer sessions 3-4 times a week. The great advantage of this method is that you don't need special attire. You can exercise in the car while stuck in traffic, in the morning in front of the mirror, or in the evening on your mat, as an element of winding down before bed.
What can you expect over time?
-
Immediately after exercise: The face becomes radiant and morning puffiness disappears.
-
After 3-4 weeks: You will notice a clear improvement in muscle tone and smoothing of fine lines. Your features will become softer, and you will feel greater control over tension in your jaw or forehead.
Face yoga is an act of kindness to yourself. It's that moment in the day when you stop frowning with worry and begin to consciously release accumulated stress. Combine facial gymnastics with regular mat practice to take care of yourself holistically and feel good in your own skin.
